ISSUES

CLEAN UP DOWNTOWN

Public safety – We must ensure that our amazing downtown district remains a family-friendly environment, from the Riverwalk all the way to the Brooklyn Arts District. Historic Downtown Wilmington is one of the most uniquely beautiful historic downtowns in North America. Let’s embrace tourism, keep the film industry thriving, and make downtown Wilmington a safe place where our children can enjoy themselves.

Law Enforcement Capacity – We can retain more officers than we currently do. We need to raise the pay to be competitive with surrounding cities. Period!   Offer those who protect and serve our city the appropriate compensation for special assignment, bonuses for time served, and take them off a 12-hour rotation. We need to be a law enforcement city. Hire from within. Make police accountable again.

Non-Profits – We need to partner more closely with Wilmington's non-profit sector to ensure the process of rehabilitation is helping people in the right way and in a capacity that is needed.  We also need to prioritize veterans and local citizens.

PROTECT SMALL BUSINESSES

Grants-   We are a very proud, local business community and to keep it that way, we should endeavor to invest in the local economy whenever possible. It takes a lot to run a small business, and we must support those who are working hard to serve the locals with their unique goods and services.

No loitering -  The majority of high tourism cities have a no loitering, or no panhandling, clause. Cities such as Raleigh and Charleston SC have had these for quite some time.  Even some of the smaller cities in North Carolina, like Fayetteville, have this law.  New Hanover County has a no-loitering law, which is why they were comfortable building that library.  It's a very common practice. However, Wilmington does not have this law in place to protect surrounding businesses.   The enforcement of these laws empowers the business owners to decide who is disrupting their patrons and who is not.  If elected, it will be one of my first orders of business.

PRESERVE OUR FUTURE

Preserving our greenspace -As your city council representative, I will champion the preservation of Wilmington's vital green spaces, from historic Airlie Gardens to community hubs like Greenfield Lake, Long Leaf Park, and Hanover Pines. I am committed to ensuring that, as our city grows, we protect and expand Wilmington's treasured green spaces.

Walkability and accessibility – As our multifamily residential matrix also expands,  accessibility without the burden of additional traffic to our stop lights needs thoughtful consideration. The New Hanover County planning board recently shifted our designation to one of an urban city, so it is important that we responsibly accommodate that growth.

Preserve our Neighborhoods- We have neighborhoods with rich history in our city. I will fight to protect the look and feel of our neighborhoods and make sure we don’t lose the character of our community. Any future growth must first consider the needs of our citizens who are already here.

Technological Future – Municipalities are being increasingly targeted by hackers and automated bots including Thomasville in 2025, Winston- Salem in 2024, and Kannapolis in 2023.

A dedicated cybersecurity task force ensures clear lines of responsibility. It can assess and report on the city's cybersecurity position to the Mayor and City Council, justify any necessary budget allocations for security upgrades, and ensure that funds are being allocated effectively to identify, address, and mitigate critical vulnerabilities.

I have the technical expertise to lead this task force. Most cities have a commission for cybersecurity or network infrastructure; however, Wilmington does not. We are incredibly behind on technology, and I cannot emphasize strongly enough the importance of having a targeted and documented plan of implementation that will protect us as Wilmington grows.
